Porter's approach to modern folk music is dark and melodic. Her voice is powerful, barely needing the aid of a microphone, and soulful. The songs she writes are often about love and life, from her perspective and many of them are character-based. Rabid vampire zombies, a humble fisherman and his wife, a distraught mother; each with their own story to tell. Porter lovingly refers to her songwriting as a collection of fairy tales for the young at heart, the wounded and hopeful.
Crystal Porter performs predominately as a solo artist but also occasionally is accompanied onstage by Mat Bridgeo and Travis Darby of Lead Mule. Porter is currently in the process of recording her debut EP.
